At least 22 people died and 15 were injured after a passenger bus veered into a gorge in Indian-held Kashmir on Monday morning.

“We have recovered 22 dead bodies so far and there might still be some more bodies trapped under the debris. It is a major accident and out of the 16 injured, we have airlifted the five critically wounded to the Government Medical College hospital in Jammu,” Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur district Yasha Mudgal, told Anadolu Agency.

Senior officials said that the passenger bus had more than 42 people on board.

“The bus skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge in Maroti belt of Udhampur district. We do not know yet the cause of the accident. While some are saying the brakes failed on the bus, some are saying other things. But right now we must try to save people and then look at the reasons,” a senior official said.
