Afghan security forces claimed they killed a senior al-Qaeda commander in a counter-terror operation in southeastern Afghanistan Monday.

The intelligence service, the National Directorate for Security (NDS), said Afghan special forces, with NATO air support, killed seven other militants and destroyed four camps during the operation near the Pakistan border in Paktika province's Gomal district.

“Four laptops, one hard disk, four radios, tens of heavy and light weapons as well as an explosive producing lab and suicide bombing instrument were seized during the operation,” the NDS said in a statement, adding that large supplies of narcotics and military uniforms were also detained.

U.S.-led NATO air strikes in the same district killed at least 15 suspected Pakistani Taliban fighters last Wednesday.

The border area is considered a safe-haven for militants hiding from security forces in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.
