Aquino ally killed in Philippine helicopter crash

A political ally of Senator Benigno Aquino, who is set to soon be named Philippine president, and five others were killed in a helicopter crash on Monday, an army spokesman said.

Quezon governor Rafael Nantes was returning to Manila from his province, about 100 km (60 miles) south of the capital, when the single-engine R-44 private chopper crashed in a crowded community near Lucena City, Colonel Generoso Bolina told reporters.

Nantes, who lost his re-election bid in last week's national election but was in office until June 30, was a member of the small Liberal Party.

Aquino, the Liberal Party's presidential candidate, has a commanding lead in unofficial vote counts and should be officially declared the winner by Congress in coming weeks.

Nanates, two bodyguards and the pilot, and two children in a house hit by the helicopter were killed, Bolino said.

"The governor was just two minutes up in the air when the helicopter went out of control and crashed in a big fire ball," Bolino said, citing witnesses account.

Alfonso Cusi, head of the civilian aviation agency, said he has dispatched investigators to determine the cause of the crash, but ruled out a terrorist attack.
