At least 32 people were killed Saturday when a bus carrying passengers fell off a bridge into a river in northwestern India, police said.

Sawai Madhopur Maman Singh, superintendent of Rajasthan Police, confirmed to Anadolu Agency the death toll of the accident in Rajasthan state's Banas River.

According to local media reports, the bus was carrying 50 pilgrims from central Madhya Pradesh and northern Uttar Pradesh states to the Ramdevra Temple in Rajasthan.

The accident occurred when the underage driver lost control of the bus, said a local police official quoted in the reports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence to the families of the victims.

"My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. The state government is closely monitoring the situation, including rescue operations, and is providing all possible assistance to those affected," tweeted Modi.
