China and Australia signed a free-trade agreement in the Australian capital Canberra on Wednesday.
The two countries had been negotiating the agreement for ten years.
Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng and Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott signed the agreement, and, from his official twitter account ,Prime Minister Abbott said it was “a momentous, historic day.”
“This has been a ten-year journey, but we have finally made it, and we will both see the benefits flow through,” he said.
More than 85 percent of Australian goods exported will be tariff-free under terms of the deal, and that number is expected to reach 95 per cent after full implementation of the agreement.
