China man shot in latest child attack

Police snipers shot dead a man who held a child hostage on a residential street in Beijing on Monday, the latest in a series of attacks involving children just as China puts its best face forward for the World Expo.

The man grabbed the 5-year-old from her father and threatened to harm her if police did not help him see a woman he had met through the Internet but who refused to meet him in person, the Xinhua news agency said.

Police shot the agitated man shortly after noon "after persuasion failed", Xinhua said.

Five bloody attacks in six weeks on schools and kindergartens have brought attention to China's societal strains, even as its richer cities' glitzy modernity was showcased at the Expo's opening in Shanghai on Saturday.

China's senior official in charge of security issues, Zhou Yongkang, called for security measures at schools and "urged local governments to prevent any extreme issues", Xinhua said.

In the latest school attack, a hammer-wielding man doused with gasoline set himself alight after injuring five children and a teacher in Shandong province last week. His widow said he was in despair over government orders to knock down his new home.
