China unveiled its first large passenger aircraft Monday, the narrow-body jet rolling off the assembly line in Shanghai in front of a large Chinese flag.

State news agency Xinhua reported the C919 as having 158 seats and a standard flight range of 4,075 km (2532 miles).

The plane was manufactured by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC).

Xinhua said the aircraft will make its initial test flight in the next year, with tests continuing for three years before it is put into commercial use.

The C919 is expected to compete with Boeing and Airbus in the medium-range aircraft sector.

According to COMAC, 517 orders have been received from 21 clients home and abroad.

The plane is expected to challenge the dominance of Airbus and Boeing in the global commercial aviation market.
