Four Russian policemen and three insurgents were killed on Wednesday in a clash in Dagestan in the North Caucasus, Interfax news agency reported.

The clash, which unofficial websites said involved gunfire, took place in the village of Kostek near Dagestan's southern city of Derbent on the Caspian Sea, Reuters news agency quoted Interfax as reporting.

"Preliminary findings show four members of law enforcement were also killed," it reported, citing a source in the armed forces in the North Caucasus.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry's regional office was not immediately available for comment.

Russia imposed its control in Muslim states in the 1990s. Still low-level insurgency continues in Muslim states.
