Germany summons Iran's ambassador over journalists

Germany summoned the Iranian ambassador to the foreign ministry on Monday to protest that two German journalists held in Iran were not allowed to meet their families over Christmas as promised.

The families travelled to Tehran after Iran promised to allow the visit and the German ambassador stayed in the country over the holidays to arrange the meeting, Foreign Ministry spokesman Stefan Bredohl said.

"As such a meeting has so far not been held, the Iranian ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry this morning... the displeasure of the German government was clearly expressed," Bredohl told reporters at a regular news briefing.

The two journalists had entered the country on tourist visas and were arrested in Tabriz while interviewing the son and lawyer of 43-year-old Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who had been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery.

Iranian officials have said the two admitted to violating Iranian laws, which forbid those entering the country on tourist visas to work as journalists.
