Heavy floods kill scores of Afghans, damage houses

Floods caused by heavy rain have killed nearly 80 people across Afghanistan in the past week, a senior official said on Thursday.

Severe flooding had either damaged or destroyed more than 2,000 mud-built houses in the impoverished country which is prone to natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes, the head of Afghanistan's department for disaster management said.

"We and the United Nations have mobilised teams by air and ground to help those affected with food and non-food aid," Abdul Mateen Edrak told Reuters.

The western provinces of Herat, Ghor and Badghis were worst hit, Edrak said.

Hundreds of hectares of agricultural land were also destroyed in the flooding, with rains expected to continue in some parts of the country for at least two more days.
