A Muslim imam was seriously injured after being shot twice in India.

A 36-year-old imam was seriously injured when unidentified gunmen shot him in the Ugnikeri village near the town of Kalaghatagi, India, on Saturday night.

The imam, Khaleel Ahemad Shekh, is currently being treated in hospital. Although unconcious, doctors have said that his injuries are not life threatening.

Kalaghatagi police inspector Manjunath Naduvinamani said that he had been shot twice, once in the chest and once near the abdomen, according to the New Indian Express.

“He was rushed to KIMS by his family members. Doctors have given him 48 hours,” Naduvinamani said. “The motive behind the firing is yet to be ascertained. We will know the details only after Shekh regains consciousness,” he added.
