More than 100 people have died and thousands of Afghans have lost their homes due to heavy flooding over the last week in Afghanistan, an official said on Monday.

The government has launched an emergency operation with the help of the United Nations which involves rescuing work and providing survivors with food and shelter, a senior official from Afghanistan's disaster management body said.

The worst affected regions were the western provinces of Badghis, Herat and Ghor, Mohammad Sediq Hassani told Reuters.

"According to the initial reports more than 100 people have lost their lives, 1,865 houses have been completely destroyed and 3,523 more partially damaged," he said.

Some 10,000 cattle have also died in the flooding which have destroyed thousands of hectares of agricultural land. Impoverished and aid reliant Afghanistan is prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floodings and avalanches.

More rains are expected in some parts of the country in coming days, officials said.
