Musharraf finally appears in court for high treason
World Bulletin / News Desk
Pakistan’s former president, General Pervez Musharraf, appeared for the first time before a special court trying him for high treason on Tuesday.

The former military ruler rose to his feet after Justice Faisal Arab complained about Musharraf remaining seated.

The three-member bench led by Justice Arab deferred the Musharraf case until Friday after the defense lawyers once again challenged the authority of the civilian court to try the former army chief, saying Musharraf should be tried in a military court.

Musharraf, who overthrew Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in October 1999, has been facing treason charges for imposing a state of emergency in the country and suspending the constitution on November 3, 2007.

A security convoy composed of helicopters and 1100 policemen escorted Musharraf to court.

He has repeatedly failed to appear in court since claiming to have a heart attack in January.
