A female passenger was killed and a flight attendant was injured when unidentified assailants fired on a Pakistan International Airlines flight while landing at an airport in Peshawar on Tuesday night, officials said.

A spokesperson for Pakistan's national flag carrier confirmed the incident which occured when the passenger jet, with the flight number of PK 756, was landing at Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar, the capital of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province bordering Afghanistan.

The flight into Peshawar from Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, was carrying 178 passengers.

Security agencies launched a search operation in nearby localities as officials said the attackers had taken advantage of illegally built buildings next to the airport.

"The plane has landed safely, and the flight operation will continue as per schedule," the spokesman said.

Although no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, security agencies believe it could be a reaction to ongoing military operations against Pakistani Taliban in troubled North Waziristan.
