Quake hits Tajikistan, Pakistan

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Pakistan Monday but Dawn newspaper reported there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake, with an epicenter in Tajikistan, struck about 7:45 a.m. local time and shook Pakistani capital of Islamabad, nearby Rawalpindi and also Peshawar, the report said. Tremors also were felt in several other cities in the northwest.

The quake follows last Wednesday's 7.2-magnitude temblor, which damaged about 200 mud-walled homes but which reportedly caused no deaths or injuries. That quake was also felt in India and Iran.

Pakistan was ravaged by a massive earthquake in October 2006 that devastated the northwest region and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. More than 73,000 people died in that disaster, 69,000 were seriously injured and about 3.3 million people left homeless.
