A leader of Bangladesh Islami Chatra Shibir, student front of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was killed and thirty others injured in a bloody clash between Bangladesh Chatra League, ruling party student front, and Shibir on Sunday evening at Chitagong University campus in Chitagong, eastern divisional area, in Bangladesh.
The deceased was identified as Mamun Hossain, general secretary of Shah Amanat Hall unit of Islami Chatra Shibir, and a 4th year student of marine sciences at the university.
Islami Chatra Shibir claimed that another three of them were killed in the clash, but it is yet to be confirmed.
Witnessed said campus premises of Chitagong University, a leading public university, turned into virtually a battlefield as two rival student organizations were chasing each other in presence of law enforcers, leaving scores injured.
Of them, five were rushed to the Chitagong Medical College Hospital, where Mamun Hossain succumbed to his injuries in the evening, and others to different private clinics. Hospital sources said death toll may rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.
Police and campus sources said clashes began between the two groups after the Chatra League attacked Shah Amanat Hall, a stronghold of Islami Chatra Shibir, in the afternoon, protesting the attack on one of their activist.
The situation at the university campus is under control and additional police forces and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed to avert further deterioration of the situation.
Police detained 18 Shibir activists and students from the Shaha Amanat Hall after the clash.
