Small plane with 22 people crashes in Nepal

A small plane with 22 people on board crashed in the foothills of the Himalayas in eastern Nepal, and officials said on Thursday there was little hope of finding any survivors.

The Twin Otter aircraft, operated by Tara Air, left Lamidanda on Wednesday, heading for the capital Kathmandu, when it lost contact with flight controllers shortly after taking off from the mountainous airstrip.

"Search helicopter pilots have spotted the site where it crashed," senior district official Debasish Sapkota told Reuters from Okhaldhunga, the nearest town to the airstrip. "I can't say if there are any survivors."
