A strong quake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck in the Pacific Ocean off northern Japan on Friday, but no immediate damage was reported and no tsunami warning was issued, seismologists said.

The quake struck at a depth of 58 kilometres (36 miles) at 11:23 am (0223 GMT) off the South Kuril islands, which are controlled by Russia but also claimed by Japan, said the US Geological Survey.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was issued.
