Tajikistan asks for aid as flood death toll rises

Tajikistan President Imomali Rakhmon made an appeal for international aid on Tuesday after mudslides and flooding last week left 24 dead and scores missing in the mountainous country.

Mudslides, caused by torrential rains in the Central Asian nation bordering Afghanistan, destroyed hundreds of buildings in the town of Kulyab, 195 km (121 miles) south of the capital Dushanbe, and nearby villages.

"Due to the humanitarian catastrophe caused by natural disasters, I order the foreign ministry to turn to the donor states and international charities with a call for aid," Rakhmon's office quoted him as telling an emergency government meeting late.

In May last year powerful mudslides, which happen every spring, killed at least 18 people in the impoverished nation.
