Three policemen shot dead in gunfire exchange in China

Three policemen were shot dead and six people injured in a rare shoot-out in eastern China, a nation where guns are strictly controlled, the public security ministry said on Wednesday.

Two men fired at policemen who were entering an apartment during a murder investigation in Tai'an in Shandong province on Tuesday morning, the ministry said on its website (www.mps.gov.cn).

Two civilians were among the injured from the shoot-out, it added.

The ministry did not disclose the identities of the two men, but local media reported that the apartment belonged to the brother of a suspect from a murder case in another city in the province.

The men then fled, hijacking four cars before being cornered by police. One was arrested, while the other shot himself to death at the scene, the ministry said.

A double-barrelled shotgun, a pistol, a dagger and more than 180 bullets were recovered.

It is illegal to hold guns in China but gun-related crimes have been on the rise in recent years.

In June last year, a man wielding three guns shot dead two senior judges and another court official in the central Chinese province of Hunan and then killed himself.
