Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has phoned Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the death sentence given to Abdul Quader Mollah of Jamaat-e Islami party and asked Hasina to prevent the execution, the Prime Minister's office said Thursday.
Mollah's death sentence, due to be executed on Tuesday before a reprieve came into force, was upheld on Thursday in a final decision, stripping him of appeal rights.
He was convicted in February of responsibility for mass atrocities during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.
The Prime Ministry's statement says Erdogan told Hasina the Islamist leader's death would engender "new scars and troubles" in Bangladesh.
