US drone attack kills 6 in NW Pakistan

A U.S. drone attack killed six alleged insurgents after firing two missiles into Pakistan's northwestern South Waziristan region on Tuesday.

The missiles targeted the compound in Karikot village, about 10 kilometres (six miles) southwest of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan district.

"Six militants have been killed. An al Qaeda man of foreign origin is also believed to have been killed," an intelligence official told Reuters. "The death toll may rise."

The nationality of the foreigner could not be immediately determined.

The United States has stepped up missile attacks by pilotless drones in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt.

But most of this year's strikes have been in North Waziristan, next door.
