Albania names new economy minister

Albania's premier, anxious to preserve government stability, named a new economy minister on Monday after the head of the junior coalition partner resigned from the post.

Prime Minister Sali Berisha appointed Nasip Naco, the deputy speaker of parliament and a former prosecutor from the Socialist Integration Movement, to the economy and energy portfolio.

Ilir Meta resigned on Friday after being accused of corruption by his predecessor in the job, Dritan Prifti, a member of his own party.

Meta's small Socialist Integration Movement provides Berisha's Democratic Party with the extra few votes it needs to maintain a majority in parliament. Both parties had said they would continue their cooperation after Meta quit.

Foreign Minister Edmond Haxhinasto will fill Meta's other position as deputy prime minister. Parliament is due to approve the nominations, a formality since the two government parties control it.

Albania will hold local elections on May 8, almost two years after a national election the opposition Socialists claim was fraudulently conducted.
