Bulgaria ruling party fails to oust president

Bulgaria's ruling centre-right GERB party failed to win enough parliamentary support on Wednesday to remove President Georgi Parvanov amid mounting bickering between its cabinet and the Socialist head of state.

The motion, backed by Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, fell short of the required two-thirds vote of members of parliament.

Lawyers and analysts said it would have been rejected anyway by the constitutional court, which has the final word, due to a lack of sound reasons for impeachment.
