Croatia has accused Serbia of being guilty of genocide in the city of Vukovar and elsewhere, after telling the UN court that the Serbians were in denial over their actions in the early 1990s.
Croatia is pushing the international court of justice in The Hague to recognize the atrocities committed in the city, in which an estimated 20,000 people were killed between 1991-1995, as a genocide. At the same time, Serbia is complaining about the exile of 230,000 ethnic Serbs from Croatia in 1995.
On Monday, the head of Croatia's legal team Vesna Crnic-Grotic told the court that "many political leaders in Serbia have maintained an attitude of denial," after the head of Serbia's legal team said that war crimes did not have "the characteristics of genocide."
The court is expected to issue a verdict on whether or not the war crimes amounted to genocide later this year or in early 2015.Last Mod: 04 Mart 2014, 12:16
