Croatia issues arrest warrant for ex-PM Sanader

Croatian prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for ex-Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, who left the country before parliament lifted his immunity from prosecution to allow an anti-corruption probe, police said on Friday.

"Yes, the warrant has been issued," police spokesman Krunoslav Borovec told Reuters.

An investigative judge approved on Thursday the state prosecutor's request to arrest Sanader, who is suspected of abuse of office during his time as prime minister from 2004 to 2009.

Police said Sanader had driven to Slovenia on Thursday and some local media said he had then flown to London. Sanader told the Vecernji List daily by cell phone he was on a "pre-planned business trip and would heed the prosecutor's call."

A senior police officer told national television late on Thursday that, according to the Slovenian police, Sanader had not left Slovenia by plane.

A Croatian lawyer, Mato Matic, said Sanader had contacted him by text message to engage him in this case and told him he would return to Croatia in three or four days.
