Greece says it has suspended an ongoing air force exercise with Israel after Israeli commandos stormed ships carrying activists bound for the Gaza Strip.
Israeli commandos stormed the ships before dawn and at least 19 activists on board were killed, most of them reportedly Turkish nationals.
The Foreign Ministry says Athens has also cancelled a visit by Israel's air force chief to Greece Tuesday, and issued official complaints over the incident to the Israeli government.
A ministry spokesman said Monday he had not been informed by Israeli authorities whether there were any casualties among the 34 Greeks travelling on the ships.
Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said, "there is no excuse. The level of violence cannot be excused ... we condemn it and this is exactly the message I conveyed this morning to the Israeli ambassador."
"Israel must provide us with all the information demanded and (guarantee) the safety of the Greek citizens," he added.
Protest rallies outside the Israeli embassy in Athens are planned later Monday and Tuesday.
