Montenegrin PM resigns, nominates finmin as sucessor

Milo Djukanovic stepped down as prime minister of Montenegro on Tuesday after dominating the country's politics for two decades but said he will remain the head of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists.

Djukanovic also said finance minister Igor Luksic should be his successor, but that his ruling Democratic Party of Socialists will have to make final decision.

"I am confident minister Luksic has the capability ... the ruling party has the right to propose who should lead the government, we have initiated that process," Djukanovic said.

Djukanovic, the longest-serving statesman in the Balkans, announced his resignation a week after the tiny Adriatic republic won the status of a European Union candidate.
