Eighty one Syrian illegal immigrants have been discovered by police inside a truck in southern Serbia.

Police said on Monday that the Syrians had been found the night before in a truck from Macedonia which had crossed the border illegally with foreign license plates on the Nis to Leskovac road in southern Serbia.

The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement the truck driver was being sought after he escaped and two suspected accomplices were being questioned on suspicion of human trafficking and illegal border crossing.

The immigrants would be deported at a later date, the ministry said.
