Lavrov says war is 'no solution' for Karabakh

Russian foreign minister maintains Russia does not blame any third country for recent fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Lavrov says war is 'no solution' for Karabakh

World Bulletin / News Desk

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the occupied-Karabakh dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia cannot be solved by war.

Lavrov's remarks came on Monday during a joint news conference with his Moldovan counterpart Andrey Galbur in Moscow.

The Russian minister also said there was no need to change the format of the Minsk Group - an international organization co-chaired by Russia, the U.S. and France.

The Minsk Group says it leads the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)'s efforts to find a peaceful solution to the dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Lavrov said Russia did not accuse any third country, including Turkey, for the escalation of tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

At the weekend, 12 Azerbaijani troops and more than 100 Armenian soldiers were killed in fighting over occupied Karabakh, which was seized by ethnic Armenian separatists in the early 1990s.
