Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the US-led campaign against ISIL in Iraq and Syria is a “bad mistake”
Russia is not against the actions of the international coalition against ISIL, but bombardment of the armed group-controlled areas of Syria without the approval of Damascus authorities is a mistake, Lavrov said.
"Unfortunately, when the Americans announced this crusade against ISIL in Iraq and Syria, they never came to the Security Council, they just announced the coalition and they announced that the Iraqi government gave its consent," Lavrov told Bloomberg TV in an interview, according to RT news reported.
"I believe it was a mistake. I think that just an obsession with the personality of [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is not bringing any good to the common cause of fighting terrorism."
Foreign Minister also added that there was no new reset in relations with the United States, but that both sides engaged in a pragmatic and realistic dialogue, RIA news agency reported on Tuesday.
Commenting on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's recent visit to Russia, Lavrov said he would not characterise that as a new reset.
"I would call it a return to the previous normal level," the agency cited Lavrov as saying in an interview with Bloomberg news agency.
