US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will pay an official visit to Turkey next month at the invitation of her Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, several news reports said on Thursday.

Turkish diplomatic sources approached by cihan news agency said plans for a visit from Clinton have been on the agenda for a while. The same sources, however, declined to confirm reports suggesting that the visit will take place in February. Officials at the US Embassy in Ankara were also unable to confirm the reports.

If the planned visit takes place in February, it will come after the second round of nuclear talks between world powers and Iran, which are expected to be held on Jan. 21-22 in İstanbul. Clinton most recently visited Turkey in the spring of 2009, an event followed by the landmark visit by US President Barack Obama.

On Thursday Clinton wrapped up a five-day tour through the Gulf region, with Qatar her last stop. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also paid an official visit to Qatar earlier this week.

Also earlier this week, Clinton made an unannounced visit to Yemen, just as Turkish President Abdullah Gül was wrapping up his visit to the country. No contact between Turkish and US officials in Yemen was reported.
