Council of Europe welcomes democratization package

Europe's cheif human rights watchdog, The Council of Europe (CoE), has applauded a long-anticipated package of reforms that is aimed at enlarging the sphere of freedoms in Turkey.

"I welcome the reforms announced by the Turkish prime minister which represent a significant step forward on several issues which are important for the Council of Europe," said Thorbjorn Jagland, CoE's secretary-general in a statement on Tuesday.

Jagland urged the package to be translated into concrete legislation and said the council is ready to assist Turkey with the implementation.

The democratization package includes reforms such as removing restrictions on the wearing of Islamic headscarves in government offices; education in mother tongue; changes in political parties law; improving freedom of assembly; and other more specific rights for religious and ethnic minorities.
