Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu urged the EU to make a choice between the whims of Greek Cypriot Administration and Turkey's strategic importance, while shaping its global strategy.
Davutoglu who addressed the Forum Istanbul 2010 in Istanbul Friday said Turkey's influence and ability to respond to the problems in the region was sometimes much greater than that of the EU's.
"The decision taking process in the EU is so complicated that, it takes days even weeks for it to respond to crisis. Turkey on the other hand responds to crisis in a matter of hours," said Davutoglu.
He said Turkey had influence in a wide geography ranging from Balkans to Caucasus, from Middle East to the Black Sea and from Africa to Central Asia.
"From now on, we will be informed about all developments in the region. We will try to prevent all crisis. We will try to stop all conflicts that threaten peace," said Davutoglu.
Davutoglu called on the EU to embrace Turkey's influential role and open the way for Turkey's membership if it wanted to become a global actor.
"Of course, we will do our part to make the necessary reforms to earn the membership and make our democracy unquestionable, enhance the freedom of expression. We have to do our homework not just for EU, but for our own system," said Davutoglu.
Erdogan said Turkey's accession to the EU would be a contributing factor EU's its global role.Last Mod: 21 Mayıs 2010, 15:19
