EU can preserve eficiency if Turkey becomes member: Babacan

Turkish State Minister & Deputy Premier Ali Babacan has said that the European Union (EU) could preserve its global role and efficiency provided that it carried on with its enlargement process.

Speaking at a gala night in Istanbul on Friday, Babacan said the share of EU's economy in global economy would gradually diminish if the union stopped expanding its borders.

"EU will become a union that has a more balanced stance based on stronger legitimate grounds towards global issues and foreign politics, if it accepts Turkey as a member," Babacan said.

Commenting on the developments in Turkish economy, Babacan said that Turkey had implemented the necessary reforms in its banking sector and areas of social security, health and fiscal adhesion, moreover, its banking sector had not experienced any problems during the global economic crisis.

Pointing to the strategy used to get over the global crisis and the medium-term program made public last year, Babacan said, "this program and our predictability carried Turkey to a different position than many other countries".

Babacan said Turkey would display a remarkable growth potential in the next 5-10 years and the gap between Turkey and the EU would be closed really quickly.

"I believe the economic difference between Turkey and EU will not be brought up as an argument in the upcoming term," Babacan noted.
