France's Sarkozy may visit Turkey in late 2010

The French senior diplomat in Turkey said on Monday that the French president was expected to visit Turkey at the end of this year or the beginning of 2011.

French Ambassador to Turkey Bernard Emie said French President Nicolas Sarkozy would pay a visit to Turkey at the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011.

"This visit will be at the same times when Sarkozy assumes the chairmanship of G-20," Emie said during an award ceremony of the Turkish-French Trade Association in Istanbul.

Emie said there were some circles who thought negotiations between Turkey and Europe had come to and end, but initiatives launched in the last 18 months had indicated how wrong those allegations were.

The French ambassador referred to Season of Turkey activities in France, and named Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the first Turkish prime minister visiting France in the last six years.

Emie said many French ministers visited Turkey, and Turkish-French relations had never been so vivid before.

Turkey and France aimed to achieve a trade volume of 15 billion Euro at the end of 2010, Emie said.

Emie defined France as Turkey's second biggest customer, following Germany, and said Turkey was more important for France than Algeria, India and Brazil.

Turkey and France could join forces in railway, energy, air space and fleet projects in third countries, the ambassador said and suggested that two countries should cooperate
in other countries, instead of being rivals.

Also, Turkish-French Trade Association's chairman Olivier Guillaume said France was ranked the second among countries investing in Turkey, and French companies were employing some 70,000 people in Turkey.

Five Turkish and French companies received awards for contributing to commercial relations between Turkey and France.

Temsa got "foreign trade oscar" for its exports to France, and Fives received the same award for exports to Turkey.

"Investment oscar" went to French Gras Savoye and Turkish Proser firms.

Lucien Arkas received "entrepreneur of the year" award for contributions to Turkish-French commercial relations.
