Iran's president hopes Turkey nuclear talks to produce results

Iran's president on Thursday said a NATO missile shield project had no effect on relations with Turkey.

"We are sure that even if a thousand missiles system were set up, they would be of no use to resist a nation's will, freedom and justice. This issue has no effect on relations between Turkey and Iran," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a press conference in Istanbul where he participated in a summit meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).

Responding to a question over a meeting in Istanbul next month between Iran and the West, Ahmadinejad expressed hope that the meeting would produce results.

"The Istanbul meeting is a historic opportunity. We hope that confrontation changes to cooperation, which would serve in everyone's interest. We are ready for this great event and we hope that it happens in brother Turkey. Iranian nation will ask for nothing more than law and justice," Ahmadinejad said.

On economic sanctions imposed on Iran, Ahmadinejad said, "Iran does not need European or American economies to make progress. We do not care about the sanctions. Sanctions do not affect us at all".

Iran will draw comfort from the Turkish presence in the talks next month, even as mere hosts.

"We will do everything we can," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters. "But our role is clear. We are hosts. If the sides want it, of course we are ready to provide every kind of help."
