Merkel says willing to boost confidence with Turkey

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said her country was willing to boost confidence with Turkey and improve relations.

"We want to have confidence in each other and we want to further improve our relations which are based on mutual trust. We want to do more for the good of Turkish and German people. We are walking on a joint path," Merkel told a Turkish-German Business Forum on Tuesday in Istanbul on the last day of her two-day visit to Turkey.

Merkel said economic relations between Turkey and Germany stood on firm foundations, underlining last year's trade volume of $20 billion.

"Trade between the two countries constitutes the quarter of Turkey's trade with all the EU countries combined. This is really a special partnership that can set a strategic model on the path Turkey gets closer to the Union," Merkel said.

Merkel said her country was also willing to boost cooperation with Turkey in energy issues, adding that Germany could help Turkey exploit renewable resources such as wind and the sun.

Merkel said Turks living in Germany made their best to integrate with German society, adding that they added a cultural richness.
