Mideast, Iran on Merkel's agenda during Turkey's visit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Middle East peace efforts and Iran's nuclear program would be on agenda of her talks with Turkish officials during a two-day visit to Turkey.

Appearing in a video message posted on the chancellor's official website, she said Germany "wanted to see the Iran government acting transparently over its nuclear ambitions."

"Otherwise, the German government favors that sanctions be imposed on Iran. It is an issue which we will also discuss in Ankara," she said.

Merkel said she was very happy to be visiting Turkey, adding that she had "very good relations" with both Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul.
