The new U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone will arrive in Ankara on Thursday.

U.S. Embassy in Ankara stated on Wednesday that Ricciardone would arrive in Ankara on Thursday afternoon, and give a short briefing to reporters at Esenboga Airport.

U.S. President Barack Obama appointed Ricciardone as the new ambassador to Turkey on December 30, 2010 by using his special authority. Ricciardone could not begin his term in office in Ankara because the Senate did not approve his appointment.

According to U.S. Constitution, Senate must approve appointments to key offices like embassies. However, the U.S. president can make appointments too when Congress is in legislative recess. The appointment of Ricciardone must be approved within one year by Senate in the new legislative term.

Ricciardone, a diplomat who knows Turkey closely, carried out various duties in Turkey previously and has a good command of Turkish language.

Ricciardone has served since 2009 as Deputy Ambassador and Charge d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. He also served as ambassador to Egypt until 2008, and ambassador to the Philippines and concurrently to Palau.

Ambassador Ricciardone began his career in Ankara and Adana, Turkey. He served twice again in Turkey: as political advisor to the U.S. and Turkish commanders of Operation Provide Comfort at Incirlik Air Force Base, and as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires.

The ambassador, who graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1973, knows Italian, French and Arabic in addition to Turkish.
