Tough Bulgaria visa regime obstacle for Turkish tourists: envoy

Turkey's ambassador in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv said on Wednesday that Bulgaria's visa regime discouraged Turkish tourists from visiting this country.

Speaking during his meeting with representatives of several tour operators, Turkish ambassador in Plovdiv Cuneyt Yavuzcan said a significant number of Turkish tourists desired to spend their holidays in Bulgaria due to its geographical closeness to Turkey, however, they changed their minds as a result of the tough visa procedures implemented by the country.

Yavuzcan said long waiting periods and never-ending bureaucratic procedures made Turkish tourists prefer other holiday destinations instead.

"In fact, Turkish tourists could be a great source of income for Bulgaria," he said.

The Turkish ambassador said that solution of the current visa problem was of great importance as Turkey's tourist potential would be extremely valuable for Bulgaria during the present global economic crisis.
