Turkey, Brazil to send UNSC members joint letter on Iran

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu spoke with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on the phone on Tuesday.

Following his phone conversations with Russian foreign minister and U.S. state secretary, Davutoglu briefed Yang about the details of Iran's uranium swap deal.

Davutoglu told Yang that positive approach towards the issue would be essential for solution of the problem as well as the success of the process.

Meanwhile, Davutoglu and Brazil's foreign minister are expected to write a joint letter and send it to UN Security Council members.

Foreign ministers of Turkey, Iran and Brazil signed a deal on Monday where Iran committed to give the 1200kg of 3.5% enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for 20% enriched uranium it will receive from Western countries to be used as fuel in the nuclear research reactor in Tehran. Tehran will receive the enriched uranium from the Vienna Group, comprising of the U.S., France, Russia and International Atomic Energy Agency, in Turkey.

"Not time to discuss further U.N. sanctions"

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday that it was not time to discuss further U.N. sanctions on Iran.

Speaking to Reuters news agency, Davutoglu said that Iran had shown political will to solve a dispute with the West over its nuclear programme by signing uranium swap deal.

"Everybody should understand that yesterday Iran showed great flexibility which was not expected before, and this flexibility is an opportunity for a new phase of diplomacy," said Davutoglu.

Davutoglu said that Iran's commitment reassured him that Iran was not planning to build a nuclear bomb.

"We don't want any nuclear weapons in our region. We don't want any new sanctions in our region because it affects our economy, it affects our energy policies, it affects our relations in our neighborhood," Davutoglu said.
