Turkey calls for UN meeting over Israel Gaza ship attack

Turkey said on Monday it had called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council after Israeli commandos stormed Gaza-bound aid ships, killing up to 16 activists on board, a Turkish foreign ministry official said.

Turkey is a non-permanent member of the Council.

Turkey has called for an emergency meeting of United Nations Security Council after Israeli operation on a convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza on Monday.

Diplomatic sources said that Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu cancelled his meetings in Washington, D.C. and would proceed to New York for UN Security Council meeting.

Early on Monday, Israeli navy forces raided a convoy of aid ships of IHH --a Turkish humanitarian relief organization-- carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, killing more than 10 people and injuring 30 others.

Turkish Foreign Ministry protested Israel.

The flotilla, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger ships, was trying to draw attention to Israel's three-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. The boats were carrying items such as electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers.
