Turkey condemned on Wednesday Greek Cypriot fans' attack on Turkish basketball team Pinar Karsiyaka and expressed concern over the incident which it said was "a fresh act of hatred against Turks."
In a statement, Turkish Foreign Ministry denounced Tuesday night's attack as it displayed the size of Greek Cypriot fanaticism and lack of the culture of living together in Greek Cypriot community.
Fans of Greek Cypriot team APOEL attacked Turkish team Pinar Karsiyaka after a EuroChallenge Group G game in the island right after the final whistle. APOEL fans threw stones at the Turkish team although APOEL beat Turkish side 82-80.
Turkish Foreign Ministry and Turkish Ambassador in Lefkosa contacted the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus after the attack. The Greek Cypriot police escorted the Turkish team back to their hotel. One thousand policemen formed a security cordon around the hotel. Turkish team left the island early in the morning.
In fact, travel of a Turkish team to Greek Cypriot part of the island for an international tournament is an exceptional case, the statement recalled, and it added that Greek Cypriot administration should have taken necessary measures to avoid such an incident.
Foreign Ministry statement said incidents had happened because of poor security measures and called on EU and other related international organizations to give a warning on common values of sports and culture.
