Turkey-EU Intergovernmental Conference set to meet

Two Turkish ministers travelled to Brussels on Wednesday to attend Turkey-EU Intergovernmental Conference.

State Minister & Chief Negotiator for EU talks Egemen Bagis and Agriculture & Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker will attend intergovernmental conference which will be organized on the occasion of opening of chapter on "food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy".

Speaking to A.A. correspondent at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Bagis said it was a historic day for Turkey, noting Turkey would not even imagine such a day five years ago.

"This shows that 27 EU member countries affirm Turkey is ready to catch EU standards on food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary," Bagis said.

"Opening of Chapter on Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary means 27 EU member countries say Turkey has taken necessary steps to upgrade itself to EU standards. It means 'there is no foot-and-mouth disease in Thrace region of Turkey. Very serious works are underway in your country's animal health checkpoints. Your country has started to catch very important standards in agricultural, plant and animal products'," Bagis said, and underlined that it was a success achieved despite resistance of some EU member countries.

Agriculture Minister Eker said it was an important day for Turkey and Turkish consumers, adding that Turkey would take concerted steps with the EU regarding food hygiene.

"Opening of this chapter is important for Turkey. With this chapter, Turkey will have the opportunity to have food in European Union standards and consume food in EU's hygiene standards," he said.

Turkey is a candidate country for EU membership since the Helsinki European Council of December 1999. Accession negotiations started in October 2005 with the analytical examination of the EU legislation.
