Turkey pledges UEFA 'state support' for Euro 2016 host

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Friday 72 million people in Turkey were ready to fulfill a long time dream of hosting the European Football Championship in 2016.

Delivering a speech to the UEFA Executive Board to promote Turkey's candidacy to host the EURO 2016 in Geneva, President Gul said that, among the candidate countries, Turkey was the only country that did not host a world or European football championship.

The UEFA has an opportunity to make an historic decision on Friday. A decision to grant the EURO 2016 to Turkey would build a bridge between the vast geography Turkey is in and Europe, Gul stressed.

I sincerely believe that European football needs a new leap. We have to carry European football championship to this side of Europe for the first time, a region that brings together the west with the east and the north with the south. Turkey's status will facilitate an opportunity to attract football fans not only from Europe but also from the Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus, Gul stressed.

It is in your hands to establish a new role model to 300 million youngsters, Gul told the UEFA Executive Board.

You will show that there is a place in sports for all, regardless of welfare level, gender, religion, ethnicity and physical abilities. I believe that it is a common duty for us to develop inter-cultural understanding through the love of football, Gul underlined.

All state organs and non-governmental organizations in Turkey support Turkey's candidacy to host the EURO 2016. Turkey is ready to host this championship and 72 million people are ready to fulfill a long time dream, Gul also said.

Gul called on the UEFA Executive Board to take an enermous step that would shape the future of European football.

President Gul's speech was applauded by the UEFA Executive Board and other dignitaries attending the UEFA meeting for a long time.
