Turkey and Syria will jointly construct "Friendship Dam" over River Asi (Orontes) which flows in both countries.
The foundation of the dam will be laid on February 6 with a ceremony to be participated by Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian Premier Muhammad Naji al-Utri.
Turkish State Hydraulic Works regional directorate officials said on Wednesday that the dam would be built two kilometers away from Ziyaret village of Altinozu town of Turkish southern province of Hatay.
The dam will cost nearly 45 million Turkish lira (TL). (one USD equals 1.579 TL)
Turkey will use the dam to prevent floods as well as to produce energy and make irrigation. It will produce nearly 13 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. Syrian side will also use the dam for irrigation and energy.
287-kilometer River Asi rises from Lebanon, runs in Syria and Turkey, and ends up in the Mediterranean.
