Turkey to lead visit of UNSC members to Afghanistan

Fifteen members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council will go to Afghanistan this month under the leadership of Turkey.

Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN Ertugrul Apakan would head the delegation who would visit Afghanistan to evaluate the recent situation in the country, Mexico's Permanent Representative Claude Heller told a press conference in New York.

Mexico has taken over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.

Heller said permanent representatives of 15 Security Council members would hold an informal meeting in Istanbul, upon Turkey's invitation, on June 24-26.

However, Heller refrained from making public the date of the visit to Afghanistan for security reasons.

The council members will exchange views on peace keeping in the Istanbul meeting.

United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has been serving in that country since 2002.
