Turkey, Ukraine plan to establish high level cooperation council

Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin on Monday met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Litvin in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Sahin said a stable, peaceful and a democratic Ukraine would play a major role in maintaining peace and security in the region.

"Turkey considers Ukraine as one of its most important partners in the region," Sahin said, adding that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was scheduled to pay a visit to Kiev later this month, which is set to see the penning of agreement to establish a high level cooperation council.

"I am confident that the visit will further improve our relations," Sahin said.

Sahin said around 400 Turkish companies operated various fields in Ukraine, adding Turkish construction firms run 128 projects in the country.

Litvin, on his part, said his country exerted best of its efforts to make concrete headway in strategic relations with Turkey, adding that without Turkey and Ukraine Europe's strategic integrity would remain hampered.

"We need to show patience to get there and Europe should also show some understanding," Litvin said.
