Turkey welcomes US approval of arms treaty

Turkey on Thursday said it welcomed the ratification of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty at the U.S. Senate as "a major step toward improved global security and a world without nuclear weapons."

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Turkey was committed to the prevention of the proliferation of nuclear weapons while it supports "the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy."

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday ratified the new START arms control treaty with Russia.

Senators voted 71-to-26 to approve the treaty, which commits the United States and Russia to reduce their stockpiles of deployed nuclear to 1,550 -- a reduction of nearly one-third -- within seven years.

The treaty also sets new limits on ballistic missile delivery systems.
